Yoga Styles Explained: Which Retreat Is Right for You?
Every retreat is built around a style of yoga, and the style changes the whole week — a Yin retreat and an Ashtanga retreat are almost different holidays. The listings throw the names around assuming you know them. Here they are in plain English, with who each one actually suits.
Hatha — slow, foundational, beginner-friendly
The gentle, classic base of most yoga. Slower pace, holding poses, lots of breathing. Nothing flashy. Suits: beginners, anyone stressed, anyone who wants to learn the basics properly. The safest first-retreat choice.
Vinyasa (a.k.a. "Flow") — dynamic, breath-led, moderate
Poses linked into a flowing sequence, synced to your breath. Energising, a bit of a workout, very popular. Suits: people with some fitness who want to move and sweat a little, but still accessible. A great "I want movement, not a bootcamp" option.
Yin — slow, deep, meditative
Long-held passive stretches (3–5 minutes each), targeting deep connective tissue. Quiet and inward. Surprisingly intense in a stillness way. Suits: stressed, tight, over-busy people; anyone wanting to slow down and release. Brilliant paired with a more active style.
Restorative — pure rest
Fully supported poses with props, held for ages, doing almost nothing. The most relaxing form there is. Suits: burnout, recovery, anyone who needs permission to completely switch off.
Ashtanga — structured, vigorous, demanding
A fixed, athletic sequence done the same way each time. Disciplined and physically hard. Suits: the fit and committed who want a challenge and a system. Not a gentle first-retreat.
Power / Rocket — strong and sweaty
Fitness-forward, fast, athletic. Basically a workout with yoga roots. Suits: the gym-fit who want intensity. Skip for a first, restful retreat.
Kundalini — breath, chant, energy
Less about poses, more about breathwork, movement, sound and meditation. Can feel unusual at first. Suits: the spiritually curious; people drawn to the meditative/energetic side over the physical.
So which retreat?
- First retreat / want to relax: Hatha, Yin, or Restorative — or a retreat that mixes gentle styles.
- Want movement without a bootcamp: Vinyasa / Flow.
- Fit and want a challenge: Ashtanga or Power.
- Curious about the deeper/meditative side: Kundalini.
The honest tip: the best first retreats are often multi-style — a Vinyasa morning to wake up, a Yin or Restorative evening to unwind. That balance suits almost everyone, which is why so many beginner-friendly retreats are built exactly that way.
